Diamond Aircraft’s All-New DA50 RG Wins 2021 Fliegermagazin Best New Plane Honor, Its Fourth Major Award

The awards keep piling up for Diamond Aircraft and its new DA50 RG (retractable gear) piston single aircraft introduced in 2017. This week, the five-seat model earned Best New Plane honors in the second annual reader-selected 2021 fliegermagazin Awards sponsored by German magazine fliegermagazin. The DA50 RG has also won 2020 and 2021 Aerokurier Innovation Awards and a 2021 iF Design Award in the Product discipline.

“We are overwhelmed and grateful by the number of accolades the DA50 RG has received,” says Diamond Aircraft Austria CEO Liqun (Frank) Zhang. “A reader’s choice award is always something very special and shows that we are on the right path with the remarkable DA50 RG.”

The Makings Of A Winner

Diamond Aircraft launched the flagship DA50 RG in 2020. The plane features a six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged 300-horsepower (224-kilowatt) CD-300 jet fuel engine developed with Continental that features a dual-redundant FADEC (full authority digital engine control) system. The aircraft’s maximum speed is 181 ktas (335 km/h) and its maximum range 1,389 kilometres (750 nautical miles). The aircraft received its European Union Aviation Safety (EASA) type certification in September, and Diamond Aircraft is showcasing it this summer on a European tour of select airports and aviation events.

The 2021 fliegermagazin Awards also included awards for Best New UL (ultra-light), Best Aviator App, Innovation of the Year, and Best Airport For Small Planes. The awards were to be presented in person at the AERO Friedrichshafen event in April, but were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The North Atlantic

Days prior to announcing the fliegermagazin honor, Diamond Aircraft announced the first DA50 RG had successfully crossed the North Atlantic route. Diamond said the aircraft flew from Wiener Neustadt, Austria, to London Ontario, Canada, across three days in early July. Test pilot Thomas Wimmer piloted the aircraft.

“The North Atlantic is often rife with clouds, icing, and headwinds on a westward flight,” Wimmer said. “The built-in icing protection system together with the fuel-efficient engine, ensure smooth handling of the DA50 RG in these conditions.”
