Diamond Aircraft Distributor Gemstone Aviation Receives UK’s First DA50 RG Piston Single

Austrian aircraft maker Diamond Aircraft has completed the first U.K. delivery of its all-new DA50 RG (retractable gear) aircraft. The single-piston DA50 RG demonstrator unit went to Gemstone Aviation, the sole distributor of Diamond Aircraft planes in the UK and Ireland. Located south of Retford at the Gamston Airport, Gemstone displayed the five-seat DA50 RG at the Private Flyer UK event in early August at the Leeds East Airport.

“This was the first public showing of the DA50 RG in the UK, and we are delighted to say that it attracted a large number of potential customers,” says Gemstone Aviation Director Henrik Burkal. “The launch of a brand-new aircraft design is a very rare and exciting event, and together with Diamond, we will continue with our promotion of this new exciting, unique, and environmentally friendly aircraft.”

A Good Fit

Diamond introduced the flagship DA50 RG in 2017, and launched it in 2020. The aircraft received its European Union Aviation Safety (EASA) type certification last September, and Diamond is demonstrating the plane this summer and fall as part of a European tour that includes scheduled appearances in Denmark, The Netherlands, the UK, and Switzerland.

“The five-seat DA50 RG fits well into the UK market, and with a maximum takeoff weight under 2,000 kilograms, it weighs in just under the threshold for paying EUROCONTROL charges,” Burkal says. “This will give the DA50 RG the lowest operating costs in its class.”

The DA50 RG Up Close

Diamond Aircraft has already collected numerous awards for the DA50 RG, including 2020 and 2021 Aerokurier Innovation Awards and a 2021 iF Design Award in the Product discipline. The plane is equipped with an MT propeller and a Continental six-cylinder, twin-turbocharged CD-300 jet-fuel engine rated for 300 horsepower (223.7 kilowatts).

The DA50 RG has a maximum flight range of 1,389 kilometres (750 nautical miles), a maximum speed of 181 KTAS, and useful load of 559 kg (1,232 pounds). The plane is equipped with a Garmin G1000 NXi flight deck featuring the Garmin GFC700 three-axis Automated Flight Control System and a yaw damper.
