Embraer Spinoff Company Eve Teams With Scandinavian Airline Widerøe Zero On Urban Air Mobility Solutions
Embraer spinoff company Eve Urban Air Mobility Solutions is partnering with Widerøe Zero, the largest regional airline in Scandinavia, to develop Urban Air Mobility (UAM) solutions in that region. Solutions include the deployment of zero-emission, low-noise eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) passenger transport vehicles that can efficiently connect people living in sparsely populated regions and areas with challenging geography.
Unlocking New Opportunities
Widerøe Zero will contribute to a market readiness exercise and a vehicle concept of operation study in Scandinavia to help Eve expand its efforts toward developing the UAM market in that region. Eve was formed to help create an electrical vehicle ecosystem that includes eVOTLs, air traffic management software, and a global services and support network to help scale up the UAM industry moving forward. Widerøe Zero CEO Andreas Kollbye Aks says there’s great potential for eVTOLs in Scandinavia.
“Although initially designed for Urban Air Mobility, we expect these highly flexible vehicles to be interesting in a variety of applications also in rural areas, from cargo to passenger transportation,” Kollbye Aks says. "Our partnership with Eve is part of our plan to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation in Norway. We are looking forward to the expanded partnership, unlocking new opportunities to improve regional connectivity.”
A Working Relationship
This isn’t the first time Embraer and Widerøe Zero have worked together. In 2017, Widerøe Zero signed an order for up to 15 of Embraer’s E190-E2 commercial aircraft. Widerøe Zero was also Embraer’s launch customer for its new generation of E-Jets E2 aircraft, taking delivery of the first production E190-ER in April 2018.
“In order to contribute to the world target to eliminate greenhouse gas emission by 2050, the aerospace industry depends on disruptive innovation. With Urban Air Mobility, we have a unique opportunity to design a new and optimized mobility ecosystem: infrastructure, vehicle, operations, and air traffic management systems,” says André Stein, Eve President and CEO.
